Mission
Mama Asili – “Mother Nature” in Swahili – is committed to transforming the life conditions of female farmers in East Africa’s rural landscape by helping them to avoid poverty and adapt to climate change by offering them agribusiness opportunities and fair wages. We are focused on empowering women farmers by assisting them to grow crops which will generate higher prices and improved yields.
We strive to provide our clients with the best organic superfoods available as part of our overall mission of promoting healthy nutrition.
Our Story
Smallholder women framers in East Africa’s heartland face challenges arising from climate change, which have led to reduced productivity and profitability from conventional crops.
Traditionally relying on producing labor-intensive crops such as coffee and tea, these small family farmers have been held back from improving their economic positions and quality of life. In order to offer them a brighter future, Mama Asili supports women farmers in the transition to alternative high-yield crops for sustainable economic growth. We train them, provide them with quality seedlings and supervise them from day one––making sure that they are using our organic methods.
East Africa, with its abundance of good soil, water and ideal weather conditions, offers optimal growing conditions for a wide variety of superfoods such as ginger, rosemary, sweet potato, lemongrass, passionfruit, and many more.
By partnering with us, you can contribute to empowering women farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Golden Berries
Also known as Inca berry and cape gooseberry, golden berries have achieved fame for their impressive nutrient profile and health benefits. They are rich in fiber, vitamins A and C, protein and iron, all known to promote bone health, improve vision, and boost immunity.
Mama Asili’s golden berries are grown organically in the fertile soil of Mount Kenya by local communities. Our sweet, tropical-tasting golden berries can be eaten as snack or used in salads, sauces and jams. They are an excellent ingredient for low calorie and dietetic products and can serve as a natural aid for weight loss by providing increased energy, a boosted metabolism and fat=burning support.
Our fully organic golden berries are offered as a fresh product or dried, with a shelf life of up to two years or more. All our produce is grown using our own mixture of organic fertilizer and biological pest control.
Our commitment to purity is evident in our solar-dried golden berries, free of added sugar, preservatives, or artificial coloring.
Meet Our Growers
Our success could not have been achieved without the hard work of the amazing growers, who decided to embrace change and help us realize Mama Asili’s organic superfoods dream. These are just a few of the inspiring stories within our network of growers. Each individual represents the spirit of resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to sustainable agriculture.

“At our family farm, we mainly grow tea and coffee. This requires a lot of hard work and by the end of the day we were losing a lot of money as prices have been steadily going down in the last few years.
“We Kenyans have a real passion for exploring new opportunities which carry real potential and the promise of cash. I was looking for alternative crops and heard about the possibility of growing golden berries. It was only later that I found out that the golden berries I was growing offer health benefits and are now recognized as a superfood in the Western world.”

“My father was asked to assist with the water pump at a new golden berry farm and was fascinated by what he witnessed. Our entire family became eager to join this project as traditional crops had failed to provide us with enough income. The cultivation of crops that thrive in the bush, coupled with modern but simple techniques, has given us hope for a better livelihood.”

“I found employment at a golden berry farm, where I gained valuable knowledge about golden berries and other crops such as ginger, passionfruit, and sweet potato.
“Inspired by what I had learned, my husband and I decided to join the initiative. Not only do I work on the farm but we also received seedlings and now cultivate golden berries on about half an acre of our own land.”
